Tumor Cells in Blood Affect Breast Cancer Survival

May 7th, 2010 admin

The number of circulating tumor cells in the blood of metastatic breast cancer patients directly affects their survival, new research has found. Circulating tumor cells are found in 50 percent to 80 percent of patients whose breast cancer has spread (metastatic breast cancer). It was already known that patients with five or more of these cells in 7.5 milliliters (mL) of blood have shorter average survival than those with fewer than five cells.

Simple Test May Identify Breast Cancer Subtypes
Classification of breast cancer into subtypes can be achieved through a simple genetic test that uses only three genes, U.S. researchers say. They analyzed 32 gene expression data sets, including more than 4,600 breast cancer patients and six classification models.  Read More →
Drug Made From Sea Sponge Fights Advanced Breast Cancer
A new chemotherapy drug made from a sea sponge extended the lives of women with metastatic breast cancer by about 2.5 months, researchers report. Radiation Not Needed in Many Older Breast Cancer Patients
A new study provides more support for the idea of allowing women aged 70 and older with early stage breast cancer to avoid radiation treatment if they have undergone a lumpectomy and treatment with the drug tamoxifen. “The standard of care for women 70 and older with very small tumors that are estrogen-positive and node-negative — the...
Lifestyle Doesn’t Influence Genetic Risks in Breast Cancer
Despite prior research identifying both genetic risks for breast cancer as well as risks associated with lifestyle and environmental factors, a new British study reveals that the two types of risk pools appear to operate independently of one another. The finding is based on analysis that looked for any evidence of an interaction between a dozen genetic...
Aggressive Action Urged When Evaluating Breast Lesions
Doctors should aggressively evaluate indeterminate breast lesions found in women with a high risk of breast cancer, the results of a new study suggest. An indeterminate breast lesion is one that cannot be definitively classified as malignant or benign. High-risk women include those who have breast cancer, a history of breast cancer or a genetic predisposition...
2 Genes Have Possible Link to Deadly Ovarian Cancer
Mutations in two genes may be associated with one of the most deadly types of ovarian cancer, U.S. researchers have found. In the study, researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center looked for mutations in 18,000 protein-encoding genes in ovarian clear cell tumors from eight patients. The investigators found 268 mutations in 253 genes, with...
Health, Money Woes May Boost Bowel Cancer Deaths in Blacks
Being poorer and having co-existing health problems are among the reasons why black colorectal cancer patients have lower survival rates than whites or Asians in the United States, new study findings suggest. In the study, researchers analyzed data from 37,769 Medicare beneficiaries diagnosed with stages I to III colorectal cancer between 1992 and...
Lifestyle Affects Survival in Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Among patients with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, those who smoked, drank alcohol or were obese before receiving their diagnosis are more likely to die of the disease than others, researchers say. For example, patients who smoked for at least 20 years are 76 percent more likely to die than those who never smoked. And obese patients — those...
