New Way to Eliminate Source of Asthma?

May 10th, 2010 admin

U.S. researchers say they’ve found a way to eliminate the source of immune system molecules that cause asthma and other allergic diseases. These soluble IgE moleclues are produced by immune cells called B cells. While targeting IgE in the blood is an effective treatment for moderate-to-severe allergic asthma, this approach doesn’t stop IgE production and patients require repeated treatments, explained the researchers at Genentech Inc. in California.

Racial Disparities Widen in Use of Asthma Treatments
A new U.S. government report says a gap has developed between minority and white asthma patients when it comes to taking daily medication to prevent asthma attacks. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality said that black and white asthma patients used daily asthma medication at about the same rate in 2003 — 29 percent to 30 percent....
Potential Cause of Asthma-Like Symptoms Spotted in Mice
A possible genetic basis for severe asthma has been identified by researchers, and although the findings are based on a study in mice, the discovery may someday help people. Asthma rates have been increasing in recent years. In susceptible people, the disease can be triggered by a number of environmental factors, including cigarette smoke, allergens...

High-Fat Meal May Trigger Asthma
It’s well known that food laden with fat isn’t good for your heart, but now a new study suggests that fatty meals may affect lung function, too. Australian researchers tested people with asthma before and after a high-fat meal or after a low-fat meal, and found that the high-fat meal increased inflammation and reduced lung function.  Read More →
Potential New Source of Stem Cells for Heart Repair
Stem cells from the amniotic sac that surrounds a fetus may someday be used to repair damage caused by a heart attack, Japanese researchers report. The work, so far only conducted in animals, raises the possibility of a non-controversial source of stem cells to treat not only heart disease but also many other conditions, said Dr. Shunichiro Miyoshi,...
Scientists Make Immune Cells in Mice That Fight Off HIV
Research in mice suggests that scientists may have a new lead on using gene therapy against the virus that causes AIDS. The researchers tinkered with human stem cells and then inserted them into mice where they multiplied into immune system cells that provided protection against infection with HIV, according to a study released online July 2 in Nature...
Early Tamiflu Might Benefit Transplant Patients With H1N1 Flu
Early treatment with antiviral drugs appears to help prevent serious illness and death in organ transplant patients with H1N1 swine flu, researchers say. Because they take immune system-suppressing drugs in order to prevent rejection of their new organs, transplant recipients may be at increased risk for flu virus infection and related complications,...
Stem Cell Technique Restores Sight to Burn-Injured Eyes
A new Italian study describes a technique that doctors can use to restore vision to some patients with severe burns to their eyes. The therapy restores the burned cornea — the outermost layer of the eye — with a graft of healthy stem cells grown in the laboratory.  Read More →
Out-of-Pocket Costs Limit Access to Arthritis Drugs
Effective but expensive biologic drugs are less likely to be used by American rheumatoid arthritis patients who have inadequate health insurance or are struggling with medical co-payments, a new study reveals. Biologics, which alter immune system function, are sometimes used to treat rheumatoid arthritis when more conventional treatments don’t...
Tumor Cells in Blood Affect Breast Cancer Survival
The number of circulating tumor cells in the blood of metastatic breast cancer patients directly affects their survival, new research has found. Circulating tumor cells are found in 50 percent to 80 percent of patients whose breast cancer has spread (metastatic breast cancer). It was already known that patients with five or more of these cells in...
