Dyslexia Linked to Differences in Brain Circuitry
May 14th, 2010 admin
Differences in the physical makeup of the brain could help explain why children with dyslexia have trouble with written language despite being able to handle other intellectual tasks, new research suggests. Researchers from Vanderbilt University, Johns Hopkins University and Kennedy Krieger Institute used MRI brain-scanning technology to study dyslexia. They found signs linking dyslexia to structural differences in a bundle of fibers — part of the brain’s white matter — that allow communication between cells in the left-hemisphere language network of the brain.

Blind and sighted people use the same brain area when thinking about manipulating tools, new research shows. The finding offers further evidence that the brain has a fairly defined organization but is still able to adapt to unusual conditions, such as being blind, said the researchers at the University of Trento in Italy.

Scientists have uncovered new details about brain mechanisms associated with courage. Israeli researchers used functional MRI to scan brain activity in volunteers as they decided whether to move either a toy bear or a live corn snake closer or farther away from them. Prior to the study, the participants had been classified as “fearful”...

In an extremely small, early trial, deep brain stimulation appeared to improve memory slightly in several patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease. The authors caution that the findings are very preliminary and that “no clear clinical benefit can be claimed” from the study. However, test results and brain imaging suggest that the...

A new technology that’s said to detect decomposing bodies in the ground could help police find murder victims in concealed graves, even under concrete, its developers say. The device can detect trace amounts of ninhydrin-reactive nitrogen (NRN) that collects in air pockets above and close to grave soil, scientists at the U.S. National Institute...

In the original Heart Scan Blog post, This is your brain on wheat , I discussed how opioid peptides (i.e., small proteins that act like opiates such as heroine or morphine) that result from digestion of wheat cause unique effects on the human brain, particularly addictive behaviors. I also briefly reviewed how elimination of wheat has been shown to...

Two gene mutations linked to a rare, inherited bone disorder called metachondromatosis have been identified by U.S. scientists. The researchers used new, whole-genome sequencing technology to sequence the genome of just one individual patient with the condition, which causes abnormal bony growths, typically in the hands and feet. The Duke University...

A new voice analysis technique can identify changes in speech associated with the early stages of Parkinson’s disease, a new study has found. “This is a noninvasive, reliable and accurate technique that only requires the patient to read out a few simple sentences,” Shimon Sapir, of the department of communication sciences and disorders...

A preliminary study has found that a targeted treatment for medulloblastoma — the most common malignant brain cancer in children — may one day be able to treat drug-resistant forms of the disease. “Less than 5 percent of patients currently survive medulloblastoma,” said Dr. Amar Gajjar, lead author of the study, which was...

Parents who engage their young children in conversational give-and-take help their offspring gain a significant leg up in terms of language acquisition, new Dutch research reveals. The boost to childhood language proficiency appears to be predicated on allowing children to engage in so-called “serious” conversations with their family...
