Study Explores Links Between Obesity and Chronic Pain
Obesity and chronic pain are both linked with family history and mood disorders, a new study suggests. Previous research has shown that overweight people are at greater risk for chronic pain, mainly due to excessive weight placed on the joints. Deep Brain Stimulation Studied for Alzheimer’s
In an extremely small, early trial, deep brain stimulation appeared to improve memory slightly in several patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease. The authors caution that the findings are very preliminary and that “no clear clinical benefit can be claimed” from the study. However, test results and brain imaging suggest that the...
Radiation Not Needed in Many Older Breast Cancer Patients
A new study provides more support for the idea of allowing women aged 70 and older with early stage breast cancer to avoid radiation treatment if they have undergone a lumpectomy and treatment with the drug tamoxifen. “The standard of care for women 70 and older with very small tumors that are estrogen-positive and node-negative — the...
New Test for Colon Cancer Under Development
Noninvasive stool DNA testing can detect two types of colorectal precancers and could play a larger role in colon cancer prevention, say two new studies. Compared with widely used fecal blood tests, stool DNA testing has higher detection rates for curable stage colorectal cancer and for common precancerous polyps (adenomas), according to the Mayo...
Sleep Disorder May Help Predict Parkinson’s Decades Earlier

In Early Trial, Targeted Therapy Fights Advanced Melanoma
By probing deeper into the biological mechanisms that go awry in melanoma, scientists have come up with an experimental drug that has had an effect in a surprising number of patients with advanced melanoma. The drug, PLX4032, just completed a phase 1 clinical trial in which 81 percent of participants with a particular gene mutation had a partial...
