July 18th, 2010 admin

Starting antiretroviral treatment (ART) when an HIV patient has no symptoms can prevent the progressive immune system destruction that leads to AIDS, according to new treatment guidelines released by the International AIDS Society-USA Panel. The 2010 recommendations were written by a panel of experts who reviewed new HIV data and research on timing of therapy, optimal regimen choices and monitoring that has emerged since the publication of the 2008 guidelines. There’s also now more knowledge about the effectiveness, toxicity and potential uses of newer drugs in HIV management.

Gene Therapy Might Treat ‘Bubble Boy’ Disease
Scientists report that they’ve successfully used gene therapy to treat a small number of patients with the condition known as “bubble boy” disease, which robs children of the ability to fight off germs. The research is preliminary, and another phase of testing is needed before the therapy can get federal approval. Also, the treatment...

Longer Antiviral Therapy Reduces Lung Transplant Complications
Extended antiviral treatment after a lung transplant may help prevent dangerous complications and organ rejection, a new study from Duke University Medical Center shows. A common cause of infection in lung transplant recipients is cytomegalovirus (CMV), which often causes mild effects but can be life-threatening for transplant patients. Standard...
Putting New Medical Guidelines Into Practice Often Difficult

Gene Therapy Shows Promise With ‘Bubble Boy’ Disease
Eight of nine male infants born with so-called “Bubble Boy” disease were still alive and well nine years after they underwent gene therapy, French researchers report. Up to 11 years after the therapy, most patients had normal T-cell levels and were able to lead normal lives, including attending regular schools. Their weight and height...
Early Tamiflu Might Benefit Transplant Patients With H1N1 Flu
Early treatment with antiviral drugs appears to help prevent serious illness and death in organ transplant patients with H1N1 swine flu, researchers say. Because they take immune system-suppressing drugs in order to prevent rejection of their new organs, transplant recipients may be at increased risk for flu virus infection and related complications,...
Scientists Make Immune Cells in Mice That Fight Off HIV
Research in mice suggests that scientists may have a new lead on using gene therapy against the virus that causes AIDS. The researchers tinkered with human stem cells and then inserted them into mice where they multiplied into immune system cells that provided protection against infection with HIV, according to a study released online July 2 in Nature...
Radiation for Prostate Cancer May Boost Fracture Risk
A new study suggests that prostate cancer patients who undergo three-dimensional external-beam radiation therapy may be at increased risk of breaking their hips, but they can take action to strengthen their bones after treatment.
