Scientists Use Stem Cells to Help Rabbits Grow New Joints

July 28th, 2010 admin

And the joints worked. “The rabbits were able to hop and walk and bear weight, virtually like normal rabbits,” said Dr. Jeremy Mao, senior author of a paper published online July 29 in The Lancet . “This was the first regeneration of the entire joint with restored functioning.”

Research in mice suggests that scientists may have a new lead on using gene therapy against the virus that causes AIDS. The researchers tinkered with human stem cells and then inserted them into mice where they multiplied into immune system cells that provided protection against infection with HIV, according to a study released online July 2 in Nature...
Potential New Source of Stem Cells for Heart Repair
Stem cells from the amniotic sac that surrounds a fetus may someday be used to repair damage caused by a heart attack, Japanese researchers report. The work, so far only conducted in animals, raises the possibility of a non-controversial source of stem cells to treat not only heart disease but also many other conditions, said Dr. Shunichiro Miyoshi,...
Rat Study Sheds Light on Cocaine Addiction
Researchers report that they’ve discovered tiny molecules that appear to forestall cocaine addiction in rats and may have the same effect in humans. The findings, reported in the July 8 issue of the journal Nature , are preliminary, but they “offer promise for the development of a totally new class of anti-addiction medications,”...
Scientists Map Neanderthal Genome
Researchers have sequenced the genome of the Neanderthal, Homo sapiens ‘ closest evolutionary relative, in a feat that could ultimately shed light on what makes humans uniquely human. As it turns out, 1 percent to 4 percent of the DNA in modern humans outside of Africa was probably inherited from Neanderthals, apparently because humans and...

The findings are published in the July 21 online edition of BMJ . Health officials in the United States have been urging vaccination...
Stem Cell Treatment May Offer Hope Against Fatal Skin Disorder
A debilitating and usually fatal skin disorder may be treated by bone marrow stem cell transplant, a new study finds. The results may have implications for the treatment of other skin diseases and also for the potential of stem cells in bone marrow to turn into other cell types, according to the study published in the Aug. 12 issue of the New England...
